Over the last year, the business has experienced more shortages than I have seen in my three decades experience. In the past I have seen sharp price increases, and I have experienced several shortages, and delivery delays resulting from material allocations through plastic resin companies. This is the first time I have seen all these issues at one time.
PTFE Rod (TFE) and PVDF both are on allocation.
The two of these resins are in short supply. The PTFE - Polytetrafluoroethylene product PTFE (TFE) and also Kynar manufacturing requires a mineral called Fluorspar which is mined in Mongolia and China. The world need for this mineral has increased significantly, as well as supply has tightened. PTFE materials have high temperature resistance, excellent chemical resistance and very low co-efficient of friction (slick) and is utilized in dozens of purposes from non-stick fry pans to ptfe tape for use at home. This particular mineral is actually the crucial raw material inside the production of fluoropolymers, fluorolubricants and lots of refrigerants. This rise in demand bundled with general shortage of raw materials has caused a dramatic price increase (almost double in the last year), shortages, and we expect these two factors to continue in the near future.
